AWS Machine Learning NanoDegree Scholarship Program at Udacity
Udacity and AWS invite you to participate in the scholarship program where you can be given access to a Machine Learning NanoDegree teaching various aspects of working with machine learning and deploying it in production. Registrations end 23rd of June. See the details.
Pro Division
Race info:
- 62.24 meters long
- 107 centimeters wide
- Head-to-bot format with four bot cars cruising at 2 m/s with lane changes every 4-6 seconds
- Racers are trying to complete three laps
- Each collision and each driving off the track results in a five seconds penalty
- Top 16 go on into a live race which will be streamed on Twitch to fight for places in the League Finals and AWS DeepRacer EVOs

Halfway through the month we already have 100 racers with entries. Two details stand out compared to previous months: JJ is not leading (he hasn’t raced yet) and ZhengYi from NYCU started racing early (and is leading) – this breaks the pattern NYCU students got us used to with rather late entries. I am quite pleased with this decision as I am sure ZhengYi will contribute to a few twists in racing action. I am wondering if time under one minute is achievable.
Unsurprisingly mean total time is three times the best total time.

Top twenty shows a much more contact in racing The difference between the best and mean total time is only 19.23 seconds and we can only expect it to go even lower. ZhengYi’s time is looking very competitive but by no means should he expect to remain in the first spot without a fight, even within the top 16 contenders. Since I’m mentioning this, RogerRabbit is the only of the nine finalists that is in top 20 at the moment, there are four more lower in the ranks.

The whole group is coming closer and closer with their times. While we have many known names returning to the racing game this month, one racer stands out: EnBW-Flitzer has joined the AWS DeepRacer League this year in the first pre-season race. Qualified through the March Open race, has had results outside the top 50 until now. Welcome to the top twenty, great time! Good luck in the remaining two weeks 🙂
Open Division
Race info:
- 26.18 meters long
- 107 centimetres wide
- Simpler and shorter than the pro track but still pretty challenging with a variety of straights and turns
- Time Trial format
- Competitors need to complete three laps and total time counts for their classification
- Each off-track results in five seconds penalty.
- Racers fight for qualification to the Pro group which is won by the top 10%
- They will also receive a Pro Welcoming Kit which is a bit of a mystery
The Open Division track is slightly more forgiving with a milder turns section but still brings many challenges to the racers.

Already 548 racers this month. We may be expecting more towards the end of this month or in July as the AWS Machine Learning NanoDegree Scholarship Program with Udacity kicks off but this is still a good number – almost more than in May in the end. Even motr interestingly, hardly any names in the top 100 ring a bell. Around 55 qualifications now expected and the 55th racer is tc4 with time of 2:23.261. We’ll be referring to this time in the future updates. Sing-1-Chetak in the lead but JPMC-Ace-Hyderabad holding the best lap. I’ve noticed a few JPMS and DNP names, I suspect the companies will continue to expand their racers groups.
